It is with a full heart and after much prayerful consideration that I am announcing that I am leaving Utah Valley Pediatrics on June 25, 2019.
Where am I going? My wife and I are taking our family to the small, impoverished country of Vanuatu.
Why am I leaving? Vanuatu has an acute need for pediatric education as they have had a one-time influx of 36 native medical school graduates without any additional training. In addition, I am the only Western-trained pediatrician who speaks Bislama. For this and other reasons, we feel compelled to leave you and our blessed circumstances and seek to make a difference in a different part of the world.
What's our strategy? We are selling pretty much what we own. With the boom in the housing market, we expect we will be able to live off our equity for a little while. In addition, I am starting a small concierge practice called Dokta Blong Mi ('My Doctor'). Our hope is that subscriptions from concierge patients can ultimately help us come close to breaking even on our expenses. This will allow us to stay and teach and build for longer. Who's replacing me? I'm thrilled to announce that we have hired Ryan Gottfredson, DO as my replacement. Ryan will be starting late August. He's coming out of the Air Force. I have enjoyed getting to know him and am grateful for how well he clicked with seeing some of my patients. I feel comfortable that he'll be a great addition to Utah Valley Pediatrics.
How can you help? I appreciate that I've already had a number of you ask this question. I have four things you can do that can make a difference. First, I know that I will need support from you, my peers, especially as I face medical issues outside of pediatrics. If you are willing to field an occasional email, please do send me your address and specialty. Second, there may well be an opportunity to come to Vanuatu to teach and provide patient care. Please contact me if you have an interest. Third, please do all that you can to welcome Dr. Gottfredson into our community. He will be a great asset to those we serve. Last, please consider sponsoring a child. Donations through our non-profit support care for special needs children in Vanuatu. They are tax-deductible and could make a big difference. Thank you! Being a part of a part of our medical community in Utah County has been a great honor. We provide excellent and compassionate care to so many wonderful families. I pray that you and your family as well as those you serve will be blessed for your goodness.
Warm Regards,
